ICJP presents its policy programme to the new Labour government on foreign policy

London, 9th July 2024- In the first of a series of planned letters to various government departments, the International Centre of Justice for Palestinians (ICJP) has sent formal correspondence containing its policy programme to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the new Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

The letter was sent to the Foreign Secretary to highlight the steps that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office should take with regards to the new Labour government’s foreign policy approach in relation to Israel’s genocide in Gaza. This included policy recommendations on matters including:

  • ceasefire and prisoner exchange negotiations;
  • reviews into UNRWA funding and UK arms sales to Israel;
  • support for international institutions including the ICC and ICJ;
  • commitments to preventing annexation and freedom from occupation;
  • unilateral and immediate recognition of Palestine.

The letter also asked for clarification on several issues, including Labour’s rumoured reviews into UNRWA funding and arms exports licenses to Israel respectively, and also Labour’s reported plans to scrap the previous government’s plans to obstruct the International Criminal Court’s pursuit of arrest warrants for potential Israeli war criminals Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant.

The letter also invited the Foreign Secretary to meet with the ICJP to discuss the policy recommendations and provide further details on the policy points provided. ICJP has a series of briefings that have been made available to the Labour leadership including the Foreign Secretary.
